Sun Jan 04 22:30:00 UTC 2026: Atlético Madrid Stumbles Again Away From Home, Drawing 1-1 with Real Sociedad

San Sebastián, Spain – Atlético Madrid’s struggles on the road continued as they drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad in their first La Liga match of 2026. Despite taking the lead through Alexander Sorloth early in the second half, a goal from Gonçalo Guedes leveled the score, leaving both teams with a single point.

The first half was marred by controversy, with a goal from Carlos Soler ruled out due to an offside interference by Brais Méndez. Atlético broke the deadlock in the 47th minute when Sorloth headed in a cross from Giuliano Simeone. However, Real Sociedad responded quickly, with Guedes firing home after a cross from Takefusa Kubo in the 55th minute.

Atlético manager Diego Simeone lamented his team’s performance, saying that their level of play would only be enough to secure a Champions League spot, not challenge for the title. Midfielder Rodrigo Barrios was substituted in the first half with a calf injury.

Real Sociedad coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, making his debut, expressed satisfaction with his team’s effort and noted the fans could see the change the team is trying to apply to their games.

The draw leaves Atlético further adrift in the title race, while Real Sociedad remains precariously close to the relegation zone.
