Trey Lance Gets Another Shot as Chargers Rest Starters Against Broncos

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Once hailed as a franchise savior, quarterback Trey Lance gets a rare opportunity to reignite his career this Sunday when the Los Angeles Chargers face the Denver Broncos. The game, set for 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS, will see Lance under center as the Chargers, already locked into a playoff spot, rest key players, including starting quarterback Justin Herbert.

Lance’s path to this point has been far from straightforward. Drafted third overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 after a blockbuster trade, the North Dakota State product was envisioned as the team’s future. However, injuries and the emergence of Brock Purdy sidelined Lance, limiting him to just five starts in four seasons.

After being traded to the Dallas Cowboys and later to the Chargers, Lance now finds himself with a chance to showcase the potential that once made him a highly coveted prospect. Despite the Chargers resting starters and facing a tough Broncos defense, a strong performance could be a turning point for the 25-year-old.

“Every year I learned new things about myself,” Lance told ESPN. “I’ve been kind of refining my process and finding my process. And now I feel like these last couple of years, I’m in a good spot with just being ready to play mentally and physically.”

Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman has noted improvements in Lance’s footwork and throwing motion. Lance himself has praised the detailed approach of Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh.

Despite the challenges of his career, Lance remains focused. “Going through everything my first five years in the league I just learned to take it one day at a time.”
