Bongino Departs FBI Deputy Director Role After Less Than a Year

Washington, D.C. – Dan Bongino has officially left his position as Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), returning to private life on Sunday. Bongino announced his departure on X, stating that Saturday was his last day, and thanked President Donald Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and the American people for the opportunity to serve.

“It’s been an incredible year thanks to the leadership and decisiveness of President Trump,” Bongino wrote. “It was the honor of a lifetime to work with Director Patel, and to serve you, the American people. See you on the other side.”

Bongino’s departure comes after he announced his intention to leave the role in mid-December. President Trump previously praised Bongino for his work at the FBI.

During a May appearance on Fox & Friends, Bongino spoke candidly about the personal sacrifices the job demanded, including the challenges of being separated from his wife due to the demanding work schedule.

With Bongino’s departure, Andrew Bailey, who was appointed co-deputy director in September 2025 alongside Bongino, remains in his role. The FBI has not yet announced any plans to replace Bongino.
