Mysuru University Convocation Emphasizes Innovation and National Development
MYSURU, January 5, 2026 – The University of Mysore held its 106th annual convocation today, with former ISRO chairman S. Somanath delivering a keynote address focused on bridging gaps between academia, industry, and government to propel India into a developed nation under the Viksit Bharat vision.
Somanath urged the university to become a hub for translational research, where ideas move from concept to tangible product, and where experiential learning is prioritized. He envisioned a Mysuru where startups collaborate with research labs and internships are valued on par with traditional examinations. He also emphasized the importance of aligning technology policy with ethics and empathy.
He cited India’s successful space missions like Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1 as examples of “frugal engineering, systems thinking, and mission integrity,” and encouraged youth to participate in upcoming endeavors such as Gaganyaan and the Venus mission.
Somanath also underscored the importance of developing end-to-end manufacturing ecosystems, supporting suppliers, and integrating advancements in software, AI, hardware, and materials. He advised students to embrace Artificial General Intelligence, quantum computing, and brain-computer interfaces.
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, also the university’s chancellor, presided over the convocation and conferred honorary doctorates on film director S.V. Rajendra Singh Babu, retired bureaucrat T. Shyam Bhat, and educationist P. Jayachandra Raju. A total of 30,966 degrees were awarded, with women comprising a significant portion of the graduates (18,612). N.
