Veteran Dravidian Ideologue L. Ganesan Passes Away at 92
Thanjavur, India – January 4, 2026 – L. Ganesan, a veteran Dravidian ideologue and prominent political figure in Tamil Nadu, passed away early Sunday morning at his residence in Thanjavur. He was 92 years old.
Ganesan had been suffering from age-related health issues and had been residing with his family since 2006. Born in 1934 in Kannathankudi village, Thanjavur district, Ganesan was deeply influenced by the Tamil linguistic struggle movement during his law college days. This led him to join the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), founded by C.N. Annadurai. He was an active participant in the anti-Hindi imposition agitations of the 1960s and was detained under MISA during the Emergency.
Throughout his career, Ganesan held various important positions. He served as a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council and twice represented the Orathanadu Assembly segment in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (1971 and 1989). He later became a founding member of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), and also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha. In 2004, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Tiruchi Parliamentary Constituency on an MDMK ticket.
However, his political career saw twists and turns. In 2006, he was removed from his position as MDMK party presidium chairman and was expelled from the party in 2008 for defying a party whip. Subsequently, he rejoined the DMK, where he was honored as “Mozhipor Thalapathy” (linguistic war commander) and remained a member of the party’s high-level executive committee.
Ganesan’s mortal remains will be cremated at his native place on January 5, 2026. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
