Sun Jan 04 13:16:07 UTC 2026: ## Yemeni Government Claims Victory Over STC in Key Southern Provinces
Sanaa, Yemen – Yemeni government forces, backed by Saudi Arabia, have reportedly retaken control of significant territory from the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in a dramatic shift in the country’s ongoing conflict. Rashad al-Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), the internationally recognized government, declared the Saudi-backed Homeland Shield forces had achieved “record success” in reclaiming provinces bordering Saudi Arabia.
The most significant victory appears to be the recapture of Mukalla, the crucial eastern port and capital of Hadramout province, seized by the UAE-backed STC last month. The government also announced control of all nine districts of al-Mahra governorate following the withdrawal of STC forces, according to Mohammed Omar Suwailam, Director General of the Youth Office for al-Mahra governorate.
These gains follow a period of heightened tensions after the STC took control of Hadramout and al-Mahra in early December, provinces that comprise nearly half of Yemen’s territory and share a border with Saudi Arabia.
“The Yemeni army and the Homeland Shield forces were able to enter the battlefield and interfere militarily to resolve the conflict on the ground,” said Al Jazeera’s Yemen affairs editor, Ahmed al-Shalafi. He further noted that the Yemeni government has invited the STC for talks in Saudi Arabia.
Fighting between the factions has been fierce. Sources indicate at least 80 STC fighters have been killed, with over 150 wounded and 130 captured since Friday. The STC also reported Saudi airstrikes on their positions near Mukalla.
Despite the clashes, the STC has welcomed the Saudi offer for dialogue, calling it a “genuine opportunity” to address the aspirations of their constituents.
Meanwhile, life is reportedly returning to normal in Seiyun, in Hadramout governorate, with efforts underway to reactivate state institutions and restore essential services. Governor Salem Ahmed Said al-Khanbashi has returned to the city.
However, tensions remain high. The Yemeni government has condemned the STC for alleged restrictions on movement in the port city of Aden, calling it a violation of the constitution and the Riyadh Agreement. They have demanded the STC immediately cease all restrictions and affirmed the state’s commitment to protecting civilians and ensuring freedom of movement.
The recent developments represent a significant shift in Yemen’s complex political landscape, highlighting the ongoing power struggles between various factions and the involvement of regional actors like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The future of Yemen remains uncertain as the fragile peace process hinges on the success of the proposed dialogue in Saudi Arabia.
