Indian Coast Guard to Commission Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel, ‘Samudra Pratap’

Panaji, India – January 4, 2026 – Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will commission the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship ‘Samudra Pratap’ in Goa on January 5, 2026. The vessel is the first of two indigenously designed pollution control ships, marking a significant boost to India’s maritime capabilities.

The ‘Samudra Pratap’ is equipped with advanced technology for detecting and responding to oil spills, enabling comprehensive pollution response operations within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and beyond. According to the Indian Coast Guard, the vessel is capable of recovering pollutants from viscous oil, analysing contaminants, and separating oil from contaminated water with high precision.

Measuring 114.5 meters in length and weighing 4,200 tonnes, the ‘Samudra Pratap’ can reach speeds of over 22 knots and has an endurance of 6,000 nautical miles. In addition to pollution control, the vessel also enhances the ICG’s fire-fighting, maritime safety, and security capabilities. The ship is equipped with a 30mm CRN-91 gun, two 12.7mm stabilised remote-controlled guns with integrated fire control systems, an indigenously developed integrated bridge system, integrated platform management system, automated power management system, and a high-capacity external firefighting system.

The ‘Samudra Pratap’ will be based at the ICG’s Kochi base. The commissioning of this vessel underscores India’s commitment to protecting its maritime environment and strengthening its coastal defence.
