Sun Jan 04 16:02:33 UTC 2026: ## CPI(M) Builds New Home for Distressed Family in Kerala After Alleged Rejection by Union Minister
Thrissur, January 4, 2026 – Kochu Velayudhan and his wife, Sarojini, of Pullu, Kerala, finally have a place to call home thanks to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. The party constructed a new house for the family in a rapid 75 days after Mr. Velayudhan’s previous home was destroyed and his plea for assistance reportedly went unanswered.
The keys to the newly built house, funded by local contributions amounting to ₹11.5 lakh, were handed over on Sunday by CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan, with district secretary K.V. Abdul Khader also present.
Mr. Velayudhan’s previous tile-roofed house was destroyed by a falling coconut tree in 2023. Reportedly, after receiving no aid from other sources, he sought help from Union Minister Suresh Gopi during the Kalungu Samvadam, a public outreach program. According to witnesses, Mr. Velayudhan’s application was returned unopened with the explanation that such matters were outside the purview of an MP and should be addressed by the panchayat. This incident drew criticism, with some arguing that the elderly man’s plea deserved at least a hearing.
Following the incident, the CPI(M) Thrissur district secretary, K.V. Abdul Khader, announced the party’s commitment to building a new house for the family. Local party workers in the Cherpu area mobilized funds, and construction was completed quickly.
The completion of the house marks a turning point for the Velayudhan family, offering them security and stability after a period of hardship. This incident has sparked discussion about the role of political parties in addressing the immediate needs of citizens.
