North Paravur Gears Up for Transformation: New Chairperson Seeks Public Input on Development Priorities
KOCHI, January 4, 2026 – Ramesh D. Kurup, the newly appointed chairperson of the North Paravur municipality, has announced plans for a one-day public seminar aimed at gathering suggestions for the town’s future development. The initiative comes as the realignment of National Highway 66 is expected to dramatically alter the town’s character.
“The diversion of NH 66 away from the town center presents a unique opportunity to reimagine North Paravur as primarily a residential zone,” Mr. Kurup stated. “We want to ensure this growth benefits all residents, and that’s why we’re seeking public input.”
Beyond the highway realignment, Mr. Kurup outlined several key priorities for his administration. Improving waste management is a top concern, with plans to resume household waste collection after a new solid waste treatment facility, including a Material Collection Facility, is established at the Vedimara landfill site. The municipality currently generates between four and seven tonnes of waste daily.
Another major goal is to elevate North Paravur’s status as a heritage town. “We have several heritage structures here that can be promoted to increase tourist footfall,” Kurup explained. “With Cherai beach nearby, we aim to attract travelers to our heritage centers.”
The new council also intends to continue projects initiated by the previous administration, including developing a three-acre playground and remodelling Dr. Ambedkar Park.
Addressing the growing concern of stray dogs, Mr. Kurup announced plans to re-establish an Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre, restarting sterilisation, microchipping, and vaccination programs. The previous ABC centre was shut down due to resident complaints about its location. “We are looking to tackle irresponsible pet ownership as well, as it is a contributing factor to the rise in stray dog aggression.”
The first council meeting will focus on developing a detailed plan to address the stray dog issue. Kurup says a new location will be found for the new centre.
The seminar date will be announced soon. Residents are encouraged to participate and share their ideas.
