Fri Jan 02 23:10:00 UTC 2026: ## Arcata Devastated by Large Downtown Fire; Mandatory Evacuations Ordered
Arcata, CA – A massive fire broke out in downtown Arcata this afternoon, prompting mandatory evacuations and drawing fire departments from across the region. The blaze, first reported around 3:00 PM, is centered in the area of 10th and H streets, with initial reports indicating that the Hensel’s Hardware building is involved.
According to scanner traffic, the fire has spread to at least four buildings, most of which are two-story structures. Tragically, two of these buildings have reportedly collapsed. The severity of the situation has led to a request for Red Cross assistance to aid evacuated residents, including those displaced from nearby apartments.
“My business is a total loss,” said the owner of Dandar’s Boardgames and Books, reflecting the devastating impact of the fire on local businesses.
Authorities have closed traffic one block in every direction from 9th and I streets. Residents and businesses in the surrounding area are urged to heed the mandatory evacuation order and follow instructions from police and fire personnel.
Fire departments from as far south as Rio Dell are responding to provide coverage and support to local crews battling the blaze.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown and remains under investigation. The Lost Coast Outpost will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
