Sat Jan 03 00:40:00 UTC 2026: ## U.S. Olympic Hockey Roster Sparks Debate: Fox, Robertson, and Hutson Omitted
NEW YORK, NY – USA Hockey unveiled its men’s Olympic roster on Friday, opting for a team largely comprised of players who participated in the NHL-run 4 Nations Face-Off earlier this year. While the roster boasts talent and chemistry, the selections have ignited debate, with notable omissions sparking discussion among hockey analysts and fans.
ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski highlighted defenseman Adam Fox, forward Jason Robertson, and defensive prospect Lane Hutson as the most significant snubs from the roster. Fox, the 2021 Norris Trophy winner, and Robertson, currently the leading American scorer in the NHL, are particularly surprising omissions given their elite skill and proven production.
General Manager Bill Guerin defended the roster selection, emphasizing team chemistry and familiarity. “I liked the way we played: Everybody was together, everybody played the right way,” Guerin stated. He refuted suggestions that Fox’s exclusion stemmed from a specific play in the 4 Nations tournament.
The roster does include three players who didn’t participate in the 4 Nations Face-Off: Tage Thompson and Clayton Keller, key contributors to the U.S. World Hockey Championship victory, and Seth Jones, recognized for his strong defensive play during the Florida Panthers’ recent Stanley Cup runs. Keller, captain of the Utah Mammoth, also wore the “C” at worlds.
When questioned about size being a factor, Guerin acknowledged it as a bonus but stressed the need for players who excel in specific roles. Depth forwards Vincent Trocheck and Brock Nelson were chosen over more offensively gifted players like Robertson, suggesting a prioritization of experience and role specialization.
Coach Mike Sullivan praised Jones’ all-around game and skating ability, explaining his inclusion.
The U.S. roster mirrors Canada’s approach of prioritizing players from the 4 Nations Face-Off. Goaltenders Connor Hellebuyck, Jake Oettinger, and Jeremy Swayman are all set to represent the country in the Olympics.
The U.S. Men’s Hockey team will begin its Olympic campaign on February 12th against Latvia.
