Trump Launches Racist Tirade Against Lawmaker, Somali Americans Amidst Minnesota Funding Freeze
Washington D.C. – Former President Donald Trump unleashed a barrage of inflammatory and racist attacks targeting Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Representative Ilhan Omar, and the Somali American community on Wednesday. The tirade comes in the wake of his administration’s decision to freeze federal childcare funding to Minnesota, citing alleged widespread fraud.
In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump falsely accused Somali immigrants of being responsible for “up to 90%” of fraud in Minnesota. He referred to Rep. Omar, a naturalized U.S. citizen, as an “ungrateful loser” and repeated a debunked conspiracy theory about her marriage. Trump then added: “Send them back from where they came, Somalia, perhaps the worst, and most corrupt, country on earth.”
Trump further attacked Governor Walz, calling him a “Crooked Governor!!!” and linking Minnesota’s alleged fraud issues to California, claiming both states are rife with corruption.
The outburst followed Governor Walz’s criticism of the administration’s decision to halt childcare payments, which he decried as a politically motivated attack on working Minnesotans. The funding freeze was announced by Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Jim O’Neill, who cited “blatant fraud” within Minnesota’s social services programs.
The controversy stems, in part, from allegations of fraud within Minneapolis’s Somali American childcare centers, brought to public attention by a YouTuber. While the videos have garnered significant attention, they have also been criticized for misrepresenting existing investigations and falsely portraying old schemes as new.
The Justice Department has charged 98 individuals in connection with fraud cases involving businesses that allegedly defrauded the Minnesota Department of Human Services (MDHS) since 2022, with the majority of those charged being Somali Americans. While officials claim that a large portion of the $18 billion billed to MDHS since 2018 is fraudulent, court records suggest the actual amount is closer to $218 million.
Critics argue that Trump is exploiting the situation to fuel his anti-immigrant agenda and attack his political opponents. Rep. Omar has condemned the targeting of the entire Somali American community for the actions of a few and has spoken out against ICE raids.
