Maharashtra’s First Woman DGP, Rashmi Shukla, Retires After 37 Years

Mumbai, January 3, 2026 – Rashmi Shukla, the first woman to hold the position of Director General of Police (DGP) in Maharashtra, officially retired today after an illustrious 37 and a half years of service in the Indian Police Service. A formal farewell ceremony was held at the Naigaon Police Ground in Bhoiwada, attended by senior police officers, where Ms. Shukla was honored with a Guard of Honour.

“After serving for 37 and a half years, I am retiring from the Indian Police Service. I feel nostalgic,” said Ms. Shukla to the media following the ceremony. “Maharashtra Police gave me so much, and I have learnt a lot. Everyone worked like a team to take Maharashtra Police to newer heights.”

The 1988-batch IPS officer expressed her satisfaction with her career and offered her best wishes to all members of the Maharashtra Police. When asked about her experience as the first woman DGP, she stated that the position is gender-neutral and that her work remained the same. She also highlighted her prior role as the Director General of Shastra Seema Bal (SSB), which she held with pride.

Taking over the reins as the new state DGP is senior IPS officer Sadanand Date. Mr. Date, known for his bravery and leadership during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, previously served as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and has recently returned to the Maharashtra cadre. He was present at Ms. Shukla’s farewell parade along with Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti. Mr. Date is expected to assume his new responsibilities later today.
