Indian Left Parties Condemn U.S. Strikes and Maduro Capture in Venezuela

NEW DELHI, January 3, 2026 – Left-wing political parties in India have strongly condemned the United States’ military strikes in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. The Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], and the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) have all released statements denouncing the U.S. actions as a violation of international law and an act of aggression.

CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby called the U.S. action a “naked act of aggression,” drawing parallels to a failed coup attempt against Hugo Chávez in 2002, which he characterized as U.S.-backed. He expressed doubt regarding India’s silence on the issue.

AIFB General Secretary G. Devarajan “unequivocally” condemned the strikes, stating that the U.S. lacks the authority to attack a sovereign nation and called for immediate United Nations intervention to halt military actions and ensure the safety of President Maduro.

CPI General Secretary D. Raja described the strikes as “blatant and criminal military aggression,” a gross violation of the UN Charter and international law.

The CPI further expressed its “firm solidarity with the Government and people of Venezuela in their just struggle to defend national sovereignty.”

The parties voiced grave concerns over the implications of the U.S. intervention for Venezuelan sovereignty and international relations.
