Fri Jan 02 20:00:00 UTC 2026: Cincinnati Aims for Winning Finish in Liberty Bowl Amidst QB Departure
MEMPHIS, TN – After a promising start to the 2025 season, the Cincinnati Bearcats (7-5) are looking to salvage their year with a victory over the Navy Midshipmen in the Liberty Bowl on Friday, January 1st. The Bearcats, who were ranked as high as No. 16 in the US LBM Coaches Poll earlier in the season, suffered a late-season collapse, losing their last four regular season games.
A win against Navy would secure Cincinnati’s first eight-win season since 2022 and their first bowl win since 2019. However, they’ll have to achieve this goal with a significant change under center.
Starting quarterback Brendan Sorsby has opted out of the Liberty Bowl and entered the transfer portal. The highly-rated quarterback, considered a five-star recruit by 247Sports, has already garnered interest from major programs like Miami, LSU, and Texas Tech. “I want to start out by saying how grateful I am for the opportunities and blessings that God has given me. I am truly grateful for all this place has meant to me,” Sorsby stated in a social media post announcing his decision. “… After a lot of prayer and thoughts consideration, I have decided to enter the transfer portal.”
Stepping in for Sorsby is backup quarterback Brady Lichtenberg. This will be Lichtenberg’s first start since 2023. “He’s a pro,” said Cincinnati offensive coordinator Brad Glenn. “He has prepared himself being the No. 2 quarterback all year, preparing to be No. 1. He was one play away. Great football IQ, and again, the staff and the locker room trust him, which is always huge.” Quarterback Samaj Jones is also expected to see playing time during the game.
The Bearcats and Midshipmen are set to kick off on Friday.
