Attacks on Hindu Minority Intensify in Bangladesh, Sparking Fears of Rising Radicalism
Dhaka/New Delhi – January 3, 2026 – A wave of violence targeting Bangladesh’s Hindu minority community has escalated in recent weeks, with a Hindu businessman succumbing to injuries sustained in a brutal attack. Khokon Chandra Das, 50, died today, January 3rd, after being attacked on December 31st in Shariatpur district, about 100 kilometers south of Dhaka. He was reportedly beaten, hacked with sharp weapons, and set on fire.
Das’s death marks the fifth within the Hindu community in December, according to Kajol Debnath, spokesman for the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council. Debnath expressed concern that radical groups are attempting to intimidate minority faiths. He highlighted seven attacks on the community during the month, including the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das on December 18th and arson attacks on homes of Hindu expatriate workers.
“The use of petrol or gunpowder to torch someone or someone’s household is an ominous sign,” Debnath stated. “Perhaps we are witnessing the rise of a radical [rightwing] culture.”
According to the 2022 census, Hindus comprise approximately 7.9% of Bangladesh’s population, totaling 13.13 million people. Political observers note that the increased violence is occurring amidst a changed political landscape, creating a major crisis for the country. Attacks on Sufi shrines, known for their liberal interpretation of Islam, have also been on the rise, with one recent incident involving the exhumation and burning of a spiritual leader’s body.
Authorities are investigating the attacks, but the recent surge in violence has raised concerns about the safety and security of minority communities in Bangladesh.
