Sat Jan 03 10:31:09 UTC 2026: Vijay’s TVK Hints at Alliance with Congress Ahead of Tamil Nadu Election

Chennai, India – Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the political party recently launched by Tamil actor Vijay, is signaling a potential alliance with the Congress party ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly election.

Felix Gerald, the national spokesperson for TVK, stated that the two parties are “natural allies” due to their shared secular values and opposition to communalism. Gerald highlighted the friendship between Vijay and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as a further point of connection.

However, Gerald also indicated that obstacles remain, blaming the Tamil Nadu Congress committee leadership for potentially hindering dialogue due to their “personal interests.”

An alliance between TVK and Congress could be beneficial for both parties, potentially consolidating minority and anti-BJP votes. However, questions remain regarding seat-sharing arrangements and leadership hierarchy.

Signs of cooperation have already emerged, with Congress workers attending a TVK event last month. Vijay launched TVK in October 2024, aiming to present an alternative political force in Tamil Nadu.

Adding another layer of complexity, it has been reported that former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and his All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Thondarkal Urimai Meetpu Kazhagam (AIADMTUMK) are also considering aligning with TVK, particularly after reunification efforts with the AIADMK fell apart. A significant portion of AIADMTUMK workers reportedly favor joining forces with TVK to counter AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami.
