Fri Jan 02 05:10:00 UTC 2026: ## White’s Dominant Second Half Propels Celtics Past Jazz

SACRAMENTO – Derrick White’s stellar two-way performance, particularly in the second half, fueled the Boston Celtics’ 129-119 victory over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night. White poured in 22 of his 27 points and recorded three of his seven blocks (tying the NBA record for a guard in a game) in the final two quarters, showcasing his crucial role in the Celtics’ success.

The Celtics are now 10-2 in games where White scores 20 or more points this season, highlighting his offensive impact. But it was his defense that truly stood out against the Jazz, with four of his blocks coming against Lauri Markkanen.

“I think I’ve just got to go out there and help us any way I can,” White said humbly after the game, acknowledging his responsibility to support Jaylen Brown. “I’ve got to be consistent day in and day out.”

Coach Joe Mazzulla praised White’s increased defensive responsibilities this season. “His role has grown,” Mazzulla said, noting that White often guards the opponent’s best player, showcasing his defensive versatility. “Just his defensive versatility [helps us].”

Despite a slow start offensively, White continued to attack the paint, drawing fouls and knocking down crucial shots in the second half. Mazzulla lauded the team’s pick-and-roll attack and White’s ability to get downhill for easy scores.

Teammate Jaylen Brown was particularly impressed with White’s defensive performance. “D-White is just like, his timing is unbelievable,” Brown said. “When he gets into a flow like tonight defensively, it’s like an art form.” Brown also emphasized the importance of White’s defensive presence to the team’s overall success. He started off the game, we couldn’t get some stops, and once D-White got some blocks and got us rolling, that gave us more momentum on defense and that propelled us to the win. D-White was great.”

White’s performance against the Jazz further solidifies his importance to the Celtics’ championship aspirations and could boost his chances for a first-team All-Defense selection.
