US Urges Restraint as Tensions Rise Over Taiwan Following Arms Package and Chinese Military Drills
Washington D.C. – The United States Department of State has issued a strong call for restraint to China amidst escalating tensions surrounding Taiwan. This follows a series of provocative military drills by Beijing simulating a blockade of the self-governed island, which China claims as its own territory. The US recently approved an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, which it claims is for self-defense.
State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott condemned China’s “bellicose language and military drills,” labeling them a source of “unnecessary strain.” He urged Beijing to cease its military pressure and engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan. “The United States supports peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and opposes unilateral changes to the status quo, including by force or coercion,” Pigott stated.
In recent weeks, China has conducted extensive military exercises involving missile launches, jet deployments, and naval movements around Taiwan. These actions have drawn sharp condemnation from Taiwanese officials. President William Lai Ching-te has reiterated his commitment to defending Taiwan’s sovereignty and strengthening its national defense. He has proposed a significant increase in military spending, but the proposal currently faces opposition in the legislature.
Despite strong statements of support from US lawmakers, the official US policy towards Taiwan remains ambiguous, stopping short of guaranteeing military support in the event of a Chinese invasion. Former President Donald Trump recently commented that he does not believe China intends to invade Taiwan in the near future.
The situation remains volatile, with the US urging all parties to prioritize dialogue and de-escalation to maintain peace and stability in the region.
