Telangana State Gears Up for Sankranti Rush with 6,500 Special Buses
Hyderabad, January 2, 2026 – The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) announced today that it will deploy 6,500 special buses to handle the expected surge in passenger traffic during the upcoming Sankranti holiday season. The special services will operate from January 9th to 19th, catering primarily to outbound travel to Andhra Pradesh, where the festival is celebrated extensively.
According to TGSRTC Executive Director (Operations) P.V. Munishekhar, the corporation anticipates carrying lakhs of passengers daily during this period. “We have carried out capacity planning in a phased manner, with the primary focus being on efficiently transporting passengers to their destinations,” Munishekhar stated.
A significant portion of the special buses, 1,500, have been made available for online advance reservations, and nearly 70% of those seats are already booked. Popular destinations include Visakhapatnam, Amalapuram, Ongole, and Vijayawada. The peak travel days are expected to be January 9th, 10th (a Saturday contributing to a long weekend), and January 13th, the day before Bhogi.
To ensure smooth operations, TGSRTC will deploy special monitoring teams at key boarding points such as L B Nagar, Jubilee Bus Station, Uppal, Aramghar, and Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS). Additional teams will be stationed at KPHB and MGBS to oversee evening passenger traffic.
Passengers planning to return after the holiday should expect peak traffic on January 18th and 19th. While the corporation is prepared for this return rush, sources indicate that city bus services may experience temporary disruptions as approximately 1,500 buses are diverted from the city fleet to meet demand on routes within Telangana, including Warangal, Karimnagar, and Khammam.
