Hoosiers Eye TCU Quarterback Josh Hoover as Transfer Portal Opens, Pending Mendoza NFL Decision
BLOOMINGTON, IN – The college football transfer portal is set to open on January 2nd, and already speculation is swirling around potential moves. One name generating significant buzz is TCU Horned Frogs quarterback Josh Hoover, who has announced his intention to enter the portal.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Indiana University is expected to be a major contender for Hoover’s services. This interest is contingent on the expected departure of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who is widely anticipated to enter the 2026 NFL Draft. Thamel reported on College GameDay, “The widespread expectation in the NFL is that Mendoza is going to go pro after the season…To replace him, I’ve been told Indiana is expected to target Josh Hoover.”
Hoover was initially committed to Indiana out of high school, adding another layer of intrigue to the potential transfer.
Head Coach Curt Cignetti has demonstrated a willingness to utilize the transfer portal to bolster the quarterback position. The team found unprecedented success under Mendoza, who won the Heisman and led Indiana to the Big Ten title.
However, the Hoosiers face competition for Hoover’s signature. Thamel also identified Louisville and Kentucky as programs expected to be in the mix for the quarterback.
Hoover, a Texas native, was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2022. In his three seasons at TCU, he has thrown for 9,629 yards and 71 touchdowns, demonstrating his potential as a proven passer. Having redshirted in 2022, Hoover has one year of eligibility remaining.
The decision of Fernando Mendoza and the pursuit of Josh Hoover will be key storylines as the transfer portal opens, potentially shaping the future of Indiana’s football program.
