Iowans Embrace New Year with Healthy “First Day Hikes” at State Parks

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Defying chilly temperatures, Iowans across the state kicked off 2026 with invigorating “First Day Hikes” at various state parks. This national initiative aims to encourage a healthy start to the new year by promoting outdoor activity and appreciation of nature.

Lake Ahquabi State Park, located in Indianola, was among the 44 Iowa state parks participating in the event, offering both guided and self-guided hike options. The hikes drew a diverse crowd, from seasoned runners and hikers to individuals seeking a fresh start to their fitness goals.

Matt Millard, a leader of the Altoona Running Club, emphasized the community aspect of the event, stating, “I just love bringing the community together…You get people of all different paces, all different backgrounds, and there’s very little pressure.” He noted the benefits of trail running, offering a scenic alternative to road running.

Sam Arnold, one of the event’s organizers, highlighted the appeal of hiking and trail running, emphasizing the social aspect and connection with nature. “Being outside is better than being on a treadmill any day,” Arnold said.

Iowa State Parks district supervisor Chad Kelchen encouraged Iowans to explore the parks during winter, stating that the winter provides “a whole different perspective…It’s just a new area to explore.”

Participants at Lake Ahquabi were treated to warm chili after their hike, a welcome reward after braving the cold. Iowa’s state parks remain open year-round, offering continued opportunities for outdoor recreation.
