Chevy Chase Reveals Childhood Abuse in New CNN Documentary
[City, State] – January 1, 2025 – In a candid and revealing new CNN documentary, “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” comedian and actor Chevy Chase has publicly shared the details of his traumatic childhood, marked by physical abuse at the hands of his mother, Cathalene Parker Browning, and a strained relationship with his stepfather.
The 82-year-old Chase, known for his breakout role on “Saturday Night Live” in 1975 and iconic performances in films like “Caddyshack” and “Vacation,” delves into the darker aspects of his past in the film, which premiered today. He describes his mother as “out of control” and hints that his stepfather, John Cederquist, further contributed to the hostile environment.
“Not a lot of people knew about [the abuse],” Chase reveals in the documentary, noting that the separation of his parents when he was only four years old further complicated his early life. “Some did, and some came close. But it was my true life.”
The documentary explores how the trauma of his childhood impacted Chase’s life, contributing to struggles with alcohol and cocaine addiction, as well as a later health scare involving heart failure. It also touches upon his sometimes-difficult reputation and conflicts with colleagues.
Chase’s brother, Ned Jr., offers further insight into the family dynamic, stating in the documentary, “My father had a flash anger, and he could lash out with a single blow and no talk before or after. He did not take to anything that he perceived as insolence. Chevy was insolent.”
“I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not” promises to be a raw and honest portrayal of the life of one of comedy’s most recognizable figures, offering a deeper understanding of the man behind the characters.
