Fri Jan 02 05:28:43 UTC 2026: Bengaluru Leopard Death Sparks Illegal Quarrying Investigation
Bengaluru, January 2, 2026 – The discovery of a dead, pregnant leopard near Bengaluru has triggered an investigation into alleged illegal quarrying in the area. Forest department personnel found the carcass of the 3-4 year old female leopard on December 27th in the Basavanatara forest area of Kaggalipura zone.
Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre stated that a post-mortem examination revealed the leopard was carrying three cubs and likely died due to a rock explosion from a nearby quarry. A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed.
Yeshwanthpur MLA S.T. Somasekar is alleging that illegal mining has been occurring in the area, and that the blasting at the quarries is directly responsible for the leopard’s death. He claims to have previously alerted Minister Khandre to the issue and urged a ban on illegal quarrying to protect wildlife.
Minister Khandre has instructed the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden to conduct a thorough investigation to determine if mining is taking place within the forest area. He has also directed that appropriate action be taken against anyone found responsible for the death of the leopard. The investigation is ongoing.
