Sarah Sherman Discusses “Sarah Squirm” Persona, SNL Influence
NEW YORK, NY (December 31, 2025) – Comedian and Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast member Sarah Sherman, known for her absurd and boundary-pushing humor, recently opened up about her stand-up persona, “Sarah Squirm,” and how working on SNL has influenced her comedic style.
Sherman’s “Sarah Squirm” act is a visceral and unforgettable experience. Described as a “Herschell Gordon Lewis-David Cronenberg splatter-gore-filmfest made flesh,” Squirm delves into body horror and the abject with a dark, playful sensibility. Despite the seemingly spontaneous nature of her live shows, Sherman reveals that they are meticulously scripted.
“That’s my big magic trick,” she explains. “It’s spontaneous in structure and order, but deceitfully messy… I never know what joke I’m going to say next, but whatever it is, it’s written.”
Sherman acknowledges that her SNL work requires a different approach, navigating the constraints of network television. However, she credits the experience with honing her joke-writing skills. “It’s made me a better joke writer,” she states. “Instead of a punchline being a giant, paper mâché butthole with a snake crawling out of it, I actually have to write a joke.”
While some of her more extreme elements may be toned down on SNL, Sherman’s unique voice and perspective continue to shine. She describes Squirm as “a rude, grotesque, asshole version” of herself, exaggerating the truth and exploring insecurities through outrageous scenarios.
Sherman’s live shows, while less physically torturous than her early performances involving live worms, still promise a wild ride. “I describe my live show experience as being trapped in Jigsaw’s torture dungeon with merciful laughter reprieves.”
Fans can catch Sarah Sherman on Saturday Night Live and at her stand-up performances, where she continues to push the boundaries of comedy.
