Kanniyakumari Government Medical College and Hospital Set to Open New Critical Care Unit and Radiation Therapy Facility

NAGERCOIL, India – January 1, 2026 – The Kanniyakumari Government Medical College and Hospital (KKGMCH) in Asaripallam is poised to significantly enhance its medical services with the upcoming inauguration of a new critical care unit building and a radiation therapy facility, representing a total investment of ₹24 crore.

The new six-story critical care unit, constructed at a cost of ₹20 crore, is designed to offer comprehensive emergency care, housing an Intensive Care Unit, two operating theaters, post-operative care units, and on-site laboratory, X-Ray, and scanning facilities. This integrated approach aims to streamline patient care and improve outcomes for critical patients.

In addition to the critical care unit, the hospital is also launching a much-needed radiation therapy facility for cancer patients, developed at a cost of ₹4 crore. This facility directly addresses a long-standing need in Kanniyakumari district, which has a significant number of cancer diagnoses. Currently, patients often travel long distances to private hospitals or the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram for radiation treatment. While KKGMCH has existing surgical and medical oncology departments, patients requiring radiation therapy were previously referred to RMC in Tirunelveli.

“The launch of a similar radiation facility here will be greatly beneficial for cancer patients visiting the hospital,” said KKMCH Dean Leo David. He further stated that the new facility will prevent cancer patients from needing to travel to other regional centers, such as the RMC in Tirunelveli.

The hospital has deployed two new doctors to support the radiation unit. The necessary equipment has been installed through the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services (DMS), and the installation of medical isotopes is pending approval and deployment by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

The new infrastructure is expected to significantly improve healthcare access and outcomes for the residents of Kanniyakumari district and surrounding areas. The unveiling is expected to take place in the coming months.
