Tue Dec 30 18:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Vikings Scramble to Keep Coveted Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores
EAGAN, MN – The Minnesota Vikings are facing a crucial offseason, not just for player acquisitions, but also to retain the architect of their dominant defense: defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Coming off a stellar performance that stifled the Detroit Lions’ high-powered offense on Christmas Day, Flores is drawing attention from around the league, leaving the Vikings fighting a two-front battle.
Firstly, Flores’ contract expires at the end of the season, making him a free agent available for other defensive coordinator positions. Secondly, his success in Minnesota has reignited his head coaching prospects, making him a prime candidate for teams seeking a new leader.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell expressed his strong desire to keep Flores in Minnesota. “I absolutely want Brian Flores to be the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings as long as we can have him,” O’Connell stated, acknowledging the likelihood of Flores being a sought-after head coaching candidate.
The Vikings hired Flores in 2023, a year after he filed a lawsuit alleging discriminatory hiring practices against the NFL and several teams. While they can’t prevent him from pursuing a head coaching opportunity, the Vikings are keen to secure his future with the team, although the Vikings would love to keep Flores, they can’t restrict him from pursuing a head coaching job. O’Connell expressed confidence that Flores wants to stay in Minnesota.
“Based upon my dialogue with him and, obviously, the enthusiasm and the want-to for us to get something done, I don’t [anticipate that],” O’Connell said. He added that he and Flores have a strong working relationship, hoping to keep him “before another team makes him their head coach.”
However, the situation remains fluid. Rumors have already surfaced, linking Flores to defensive coordinator vacancies with other teams, including the Dallas Cowboys. Ultimately, financial considerations will likely play a significant role. If Flores doesn’t land a head coaching job, he could leverage his success to become the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the league, whether in Minnesota or elsewhere. The Vikings face a significant challenge to ensure Flores remains in purple and gold.
