Wed Dec 31 01:11:34 UTC 2025: UAE Withdraws Forces from Yemen Amid Rising Tensions with Saudi Arabia

Abu Dhabi, UAE – The United Arab Emirates announced Tuesday it is withdrawing its remaining “counterterrorism” forces from Yemen, citing a “comprehensive assessment” of its role in the country. The move comes after a series of escalating events that highlight growing rifts within the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen.

The withdrawal follows accusations from Riyadh that the UAE has been supporting separatist groups, particularly the Southern Transition Council (STC), which seeks an independent state in southern Yemen. The Saudi government has expressed concern over the STC’s recent territorial gains, particularly in provinces bordering Saudi Arabia, considering it a threat to its national security.

Adding fuel to the fire, Saudi Arabia-led coalition forces conducted an airstrike on the port of Mukalla on Tuesday, targeting what they claimed was a UAE-linked weapons shipment destined for the STC. This incident prompted Yemen’s internationally recognized government, backed by Saudi Arabia, to demand the UAE withdraw its forces within 24 hours.

The UAE expressed surprise at the airstrike, stating the shipment was for its own forces and did not contain weapons. However, the Ministry of Defence subsequently announced the termination of its remaining counterterrorism operations in Yemen, emphasizing the safety of its personnel.

The sudden escalation has sparked diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation. Qatar has welcomed statements from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, hoping to promote regional stability. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister has also engaged in discussions with US and Pakistani officials regarding the unfolding regional developments.

The withdrawal marks a significant shift in the dynamics of the Yemen conflict, raising questions about the future of the Saudi-led coalition and the broader stability of the region. The STC remains defiant, stating there is “no thinking about withdrawal” from the areas it has seized, further complicating the already complex situation.
