Wed Dec 31 05:24:58 UTC 2025: ## Thai Release of Cambodian POWs Signals Thawing Relations After Border Conflict

BANGKOK/PHNOM PENH – December 31, 2025: Thailand has released 18 Cambodian soldiers held as prisoners of war for five months, marking a significant step towards normalizing relations after recent border clashes. The release, which occurred on Wednesday at the border checkpoint between Thailand’s Chanthaburi province and Cambodia’s Pailin province, fulfills the terms of a ceasefire agreement signed by the two countries’ Defence Ministers on December 27th.

“The repatriation of the 18 Cambodian soldiers was undertaken as a demonstration of goodwill and confidence-building,” stated Thailand’s Foreign Ministry. Cambodia’s Defence Ministry echoed this sentiment, adding that the release “creates an environment conducive to peace, stability, and the full normalisation of relations.”

The soldiers were captured in late July, coinciding with the initial ceasefire brokered by Malaysia and pushed by the United States. Discrepancies exist regarding the circumstances of their capture, with Cambodia claiming friendly intentions and Thailand alleging hostile intent. Two soldiers were repatriated earlier for medical reasons.

Despite the initial ceasefire, cross-border violence escalated in December, resulting in significant casualties. Thailand reported the deaths of 26 soldiers, one civilian, and 44 civilian deaths as a result of the recent combat.

The ceasefire agreement mandated the soldiers’ release if combat ceased for 72 hours. While the deadline passed on Tuesday, Thai authorities cited concerns about Cambodian drone activity before proceeding.

The prisoner release removes a major obstacle towards peace after two rounds of combat due to competing territorial claims. It is hoped that the release will pave the way for improved relations and lasting peace between the two nations.
