Tue Dec 30 19:48:02 UTC 2025: Syria Imposes Curfew in Latakia After Attacks on Alawite Neighborhoods
Latakia, Syria – Syrian authorities have imposed an overnight curfew in the coastal city of Latakia following a surge in violence targeting predominantly Alawite neighborhoods. The move comes after unidentified individuals vandalized cars and shops in the city on Monday, prompting security forces to reinforce their presence.
State media reported the arrest of 21 individuals allegedly linked to the former regime of Bashar al-Assad, accusing them of “criminal acts, sectarian incitement, and targeting internal security forces.” The curfew, effective from 5 PM local time Tuesday to 6 AM Wednesday, aims to restore order and ensure the safety of citizens.
The unrest follows deadly protests sparked by a bombing in Homs, during which at least three people were killed as security forces dispersed the crowds. One of the deceased was reportedly a member of Syria’s security forces.
These events present a significant challenge for President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government, which has been working to stabilize the country and rebuild international ties after the end of the 14-year civil war and the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Alawite communities, who held prominent positions under the previous regime, have increasingly been targeted since its fall. The recent violence adds to the concerns of minority groups who fear for their safety despite assurances from the government in Damascus. Military deployments have been sent to Latakia and Tartous.
