Oceania and East Asia Ring in 2026 with Fireworks, Traditions, and Reflection

Auckland, Sydney, Tokyo – As the final hours of 2025 ticked away, celebrations erupted across Oceania and East Asia, marking the arrival of 2026. Kiritimati Island in Kiribati was the first to welcome the new year.

New Zealand led the charge with a spectacular fireworks display launched from Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower. Thousands gathered to witness the dazzling show, which featured approximately 3,500 fireworks.

South Korea recognizes January 1st as Sinjeong, a public holiday marking the start of the calendar year, while their Lunar New Year, Seollal, holds deeper cultural significance. North Korea also observed the New Year with official recognition across the country.
