Wed Dec 31 01:10:00 UTC 2025: Newcastle United Faces Injury Crisis Ahead of Burnley Clash; Pope’s Fitness in Doubt

Manchester, UK – Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is facing a selection headache ahead of Tuesday’s away game against Burnley, with a significant injury list and doubts surrounding the fitness of goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Pope, who recently returned to the squad after a month-long absence with a groin injury, was ill before the Boxing Day game against Manchester United and his condition is now being reassessed. “I need to see that Nick’s back to his very best,” Howe stated, adding that he would make a call after seeing Pope in training.

The Magpies’ defensive woes continue, with Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Tino Livramento, Jamaal Lascelles, and Emil Krafth all sidelined. To make matters worse, Anthony Elanga has also joined William Osula on the injury list. Howe acknowledged the strain on the backline, highlighting the impressive performance of Lewis Miley playing out of position. “Our backline’s been really stretched… We really would welcome some of those players back,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Howe is determined to end the year with a victory at Turf Moor, a ground he knows well, having managed Burnley between 2011 and 2012. He emphasized the importance of rotating players given the demanding festive schedule, but admitted the current situation makes that difficult.

Youngsters like Yoane and Sam are being carefully managed due to their return to fitness or young age. Howe praised Sam’s talent and attitude, emphasizing the need to protect and nurture him.

Howe acknowledged that Newcastle need to rediscover their intensity on the pitch, pointing to the first half against Chelsea as an example of their capabilities. He is hoping for a positive result against Burnley to give the traveling supporters “the feeling that they want”.
