Mysuru Environmentalists Urge Government to Protect Fragile Chamundi Hills Ecosystem

Mysuru, December 31, 2025 – Local environmentalists are imploring the government to prioritize the conservation of Chamundi Hills, emphasizing its vital role as a watershed for Mysuru and a fragile geological and hydrological system. In a memorandum submitted to authorities, they argue that unrestricted development threatens groundwater recharge and downstream water availability.

Activists advocate for scientifically determined limits on construction, traffic, foot traffic, and infrastructure to prevent irreversible damage. They warn against incremental approvals lacking an integrated carrying-capacity framework. The memorandum highlights that Chamundi Hills is not merely a site for infrastructure but a living ecosystem, a cultural and spiritual symbol, and a geological formation millions of years in the making.

Environmentalists point to a rich biodiversity within Chamundi Hills, citing data compiled by organizations like Mysore Nature. Their website documents 153 butterfly species, 193 bird species (including 134 resident species with 72 breeding locally), and mammals like bonnet macaques, leopards, and pangolins. The activists stress that damage to this unique ecosystem beyond a certain point cannot be repaired through engineering alone.
