Tue Dec 30 22:50:00 UTC 2025: Gig Workers Strike Nationwide, Disrupting Delivery Services on New Year’s Eve

New Delhi/Hyderabad – A nationwide strike by gig workers has brought delivery services to a standstill in major Indian cities on New Year’s Eve. The strike, which commenced on Wednesday, is impacting services provided by Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, Zepto, Amazon, Flipkart, and others in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Chennai.

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union and the Indian Federation of App Based Transport Workers are supporting the strike, along with gig unions from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi-NCR, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.

Workers are protesting low pay, lack of job security, and the absence of benefits like accident insurance and health insurance. They are also demanding the removal of the 10-minute delivery option.

The strike is expected to disrupt New Year’s Eve celebrations as it impacts food and grocery deliveries. Consumers may face delays or cancellations of orders, and businesses relying on last-mile delivery may also be affected.

While the strike will cause immediate income loss for the gig workers, they hope it will lead to long-term benefits such as job security, better wages, and insurance. The situation puts pressure on the government to intervene and potentially include gig workers in labor laws.
