Mon Dec 29 18:28:45 UTC 2025: ## South Africa Edge Zimbabwe in Thriller, Egypt Top Group B Despite Draw

Marrakesh, Morocco – South Africa secured their place in the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Zimbabwe in Marrakesh on Monday. Oswin Appollis converted a late penalty to seal the win, dumping their southern African rivals out of the tournament. The thrilling match saw South Africa lead three times, with goals from Tshepang Moremi, Lyle Foster, and ultimately Appollis. Zimbabwe fought back valiantly, with a stunning solo effort from Tawanda Maswanhise and an Aubrey Modiba own goal keeping them in contention. However, Marvelous Nakamba’s late handball in the box proved decisive.

The victory secured South Africa second place in Group B with six points, one point behind group winners Egypt. While they progressed, coach Hugo Broos expressed concern over his team’s defensive vulnerabilities.

Meanwhile, in Agadir, a second-string Egypt side maintained their unbeaten run in a goalless draw against Angola. With their place as group winners already secured, Egypt rested key players such as Mohamed Salah. Angola’s two points mean they face an anxious wait to see if they qualify for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams. Despite having the better chances, Angola failed to capitalize, with Chico Banza coming closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half.

South Africa will now advance to the last 16, hoping to improve on their third-place finish in the Ivory Coast two years ago. Egypt will also stay in Agadir for their last-16 clash against one of the best third-placed finishers.
