Tue Dec 30 05:10:00 UTC 2025: Lakers Snap Losing Streak with Decisive Win Over Kings Following Redick’s Call to Action
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Lakers (20-10) delivered a resounding 125-101 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, snapping a three-game losing streak that followed a players-only meeting and a challenge from head coach JJ Redick. For the first time this season, the Lakers dominated every quarter, fueled by strong performances from Luka Doncic (34 points) and LeBron James (24 points).
The win came amid Austin Reaves’ absence, giving Nick Smith Jr. an opportunity to shine. The 21-year-old guard capitalized with a stellar performance off the bench, scoring 21 points, including five three-pointers.
“It’s why we wanted him on the Lakers and part of our program, because we knew he could score,” Redick said. “I like when he’s aggressive. … If he could just do him within our structure, a lot of times, good things happen.”
Coach Redick also experimented with a new substitution pattern, giving Doncic and James more opportunities to lead the offense independently. According to Redick the team plans to use this pattern for the “foreseeable future.”
Following three blowout losses, Redick said he challenged his players for a “reconnection” and a better start. Doncic responded by focusing on distributing the ball, leading to 25 assists on 47 made shots for the Lakers.
While the win provides a much-needed boost, the Lakers face a tougher test in their next game against the Detroit Pistons (24-7), who lead the Eastern Conference and are known for their strong rebounding.
