J&K Court Grants Bail to Eight in Custodial Torture Case
Srinagar, December 30, 2025: A court in Jammu and Kashmir today granted bail to eight individuals, including six police officers, who are accused of torturing a fellow policeman while in custody back in February 2023. The case involves disturbing allegations of severe torture, including the amputation of the victim’s genital organs.
The court has set stringent conditions for the accused to remain out on bail. Each individual is required to furnish a bail bond of ₹1 lakh with one surety. They are also obligated to deposit their passports with the court and are prohibited from leaving the court’s jurisdiction without explicit prior permission.
Furthermore, the court explicitly warned the accused against any form of intimidation, interference, or tampering with prosecution evidence, or threatening any witnesses involved in the trial. A breach of these conditions, the court stated, would result in the immediate cancellation of bail.
The case stems from a complaint filed by policeman Khurshid Ahmad Chohan, who accused two civilians and six policemen, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Ajaz Ahmad Sheikh, of subjecting him to severe custodial torture at a center in Kupwara.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating the matter following a directive from the Supreme Court in 2025. The CBI’s chargesheet alleges that the victim suffered the amputation of his “genital organs and testicles” during interrogation.
The CBI has registered a case under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal conspiracy, attempt to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons, and wrongful confinement.
