Pezeshkian Pledges Action as Iranian Currency Crisis Fuels Protests

Tehran, Iran – Amidst growing public discontent over the plummeting Iranian rial, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has promised to address the economic hardship faced by citizens. His statements came after two days of protests in Tehran, where shopkeepers closed their businesses and took to the streets, chanting against the worsening economic conditions.

Pezeshkian acknowledged the protesters’ concerns, stating on social media that the “livelihood of the people is my daily concern.” He said he has directed the Interior Minister to engage in dialogue with protest representatives, aiming for the government to “act with all its might to resolve problems and respond responsibly.”

The rial has been declining rapidly due to sanctions, diplomatic pressure, and regional tensions. The currency crisis compounds existing economic woes, including a staggering 50% inflation rate, rising taxes, and an energy and water crisis.

While Iranian state media attribute the protests to the currency depreciation, broader discontent with the theocratic government also appears to be a factor. Riot police have reportedly used tear gas to disperse demonstrators. The protests are the latest expression of public frustration, following widespread demonstrations in 2022 and 2023 sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.

The ongoing economic crisis is taking place against a backdrop of increasing international pressure on Iran over its nuclear program.
