St. Louis Battlehawks Name Former Rams WR Ricky Proehl as Head Coach
ST. LOUIS, MO – The St. Louis Battlehawks of the UFL have announced former St. Louis Rams wide receiver Ricky Proehl as their new head coach, effective immediately. Proehl, a key member of the Rams’ “Greatest Show on Turf” era and Super Bowl XXXIV champion, replaces Anthony Becht, who recently accepted the head coaching position with the Orlando Storm.
Proehl brings a wealth of experience to the Battlehawks, both as a player and coach. During his tenure with the Rams from 1998 to 2002, he made a legendary touchdown catch from Kurt Warner in the NFC Championship game that propelled the team to Super Bowl victory. He previously served as the Battlehawks’ wide receivers coach in 2023.
“I have so many meaningful and special memories of St. Louis, not only because of the success on the field, but because of the people who made it feel like home,” said Proehl. “I valued the opportunity to work alongside Anthony Becht, wish him the very best, and am truly honored to return now as the Battlehawks head coach.”
UFL President and CEO Russ Brandon praised the hire, stating, “Ricky Proehl is the perfect fit to step into the shoes of head coach of the St. Louis Battlehawks. He has not only achieved greatness on the gridiron as a player and a coach, but he is deeply rooted in the Gateway City where he was Super Bowl champion with St. Louis Rams and an assistant coach with the St. Louis Battlehawks.”
Proehl inherits a Battlehawks team that has consistently performed well, reaching the UFL playoffs in both 2024 and 2025 with winning records, though they are still seeking their first championship. He aims to build upon this foundation and lead the team to greater success.
“Since my playing career, my focus has been on developing players and helping them reach the next level. We will continue that commitment as we work to bring another football championship to the best sports town in the country.”
