Lagos, Nigeria – December 30, 2025 – Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Nigeria on Monday, December 29th, resulting in the deaths of two passengers and minor injuries to the boxer.
According to Nigerian police, preliminary investigations indicate the vehicle Joshua was travelling in was speeding and lost control during an overtaking maneuver before crashing into a stationary truck. The accident occurred near Sagamu on the major thoroughfare linking Ogun state to Lagos.
The Lagos state commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the accident and stated ambulances were dispatched to the scene. Photos circulating online showed Joshua, shirtless, being extricated from the wreckage.
“Anthony Joshua is in an undisclosed hospital being treated for his injuries,” said Lanre Ogunlowo, the commissioner of police for Ogun state. The Ogun state government confirmed two male foreign nationals died at the scene.
Joshua, a British national of Nigerian heritage, had recently defeated Jake Paul in a boxing match on December 19th. He was reportedly in talks to fight Tyson Fury in 2026. The boxer was briefly sent to boarding school in Nigeria at the age of 11. The Federal Road Safety Corps is continuing its investigation into the cause of the accident.
