New Collection Celebrates Music in T. Janakiraman’s Short Stories

Chennai, December 30, 2025 – Kalachuvadu publications has released a new collection of short stories by renowned Tamil writer T. Janakiraman, focusing on the theme of music. The collection, featuring a preface by Sangita Kalanidhi Sanjay Subrahmanyan, explores the role of Carnatic classical music in the lives of his characters.

Janakiraman’s own strong musical background, influenced by his father and training from Umayalpuram Swaminatha Iyer, deeply informed his writing. While the stories celebrate the beauty of Carnatic music, they also reveal Janakiraman’s sharp opinions on other musical forms and critique of music criticism.

Highlights of the collection include “Rasikarum Rasikaiyum,” where a musician refuses to exploit a woman’s admiration, “Kuzhanthaimethai,” depicting the challenges faced by a child prodigy, and “Pashanga Ragam,” a critique of a detached music critic. Although appreciated, some readers are disappointed by the absence of Natesanna, regarded as one of Janakiraman’s finest stories.

Sanjay Subrahmanyan notes that Janakiraman masterfully conveys the experience of music through literary beauty and aesthetic sensitivity, rather than technical jargon. This collection offers both dedicated fans and new readers a unique insight into Janakiraman’s world.
