Matthews’ Iron Will: Falcons’ Tackle Set to Tie for Fourth-Longest Consecutive Starts Among Offensive Linemen

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. – Atlanta Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews is set to tie for fourth place for most consecutive starts by an offensive lineman since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger when the Rams visit Atlanta on December 29th on ESPN. Known for his remarkable durability and unwavering commitment, Matthews will match former Cleveland Browns’ lineman Doug Dieken, marking his 194th consecutive start.

Matthews’ streak is not only the longest active one in the NFL but it also continues a family legacy of longevity and reliability on the field. His father, Bruce Matthews, a Hall of Famer, holds the record for consecutive starts among offensive linemen with 229 games.

Despite suffering a high ankle sprain earlier this season, Matthews’ dedication to recovery and a day-by-day approach allowed him to return to the starting lineup quickly, showcasing his resilience. His commitment extends beyond injury, demonstrated when he left the birth of his first child to make it back in time to play for his team.

“We know who he is,” said Falcons coach Raheem Morris. “We know what he doesn’t miss.”

While genetics may play a role, Matthews credits his streak to preparation, work ethic, nutrition, faith, and an iron will. Though signed with the Falcons through 2028, Matthews remains focused on the present, taking it “day-by-day” and aiming to continue playing as long as his body allows.
