CHENNAI, INDIA – December 29, 2025 – The Highways Department has initiated a significant project to widen a 2.5-kilometer stretch of Sardar Patel Road, between IIT Madras and Chellammal College on the GST Road. The ₹48 crore undertaking aims to transform the current four-lane road into a six-lane thoroughfare, complete with service lanes and footpaths on both sides.

Officials report the widening is intended to address persistent traffic bottlenecks from the Taluk Office junction to Chellammal College. Construction will involve adjustments to the compound walls of several government institutions, including Anna University and the Highways Research Station. The Raj Bhavan will remain unaffected due to its status as a national park; instead, the road alignment will shift slightly to the right.

The project, sanctioned by the state government in September, will also include the construction of footpaths alongside storm-water drains. G.
