Mon Dec 29 03:54:27 UTC 2025: ## Deadly Train Derailment in Southern Mexico Leaves 13 Dead, Dozens Injured
Nizanda, Oaxaca, Mexico – A passenger train carrying 250 people derailed partially in southern Mexico on Sunday, resulting in at least 13 fatalities and 98 injuries, authorities confirmed. The accident occurred near the town of Nizanda in Oaxaca as the Interoceanic Train, linking the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz, rounded a curve.
According to the Mexican Navy, which is leading the rescue efforts, 241 passengers and nine crew members were aboard the train at the time of the derailment. While 139 passengers are reportedly safe, 36 of the 98 injured are still receiving medical assistance. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on X that at least five of the injured are in serious condition and has dispatched the Secretary of the Navy and other senior officials to the scene to assist affected families. The Ministry of Interior is coordinating the overall response.
Images circulating online show carriages overturned and separated from the tracks. Reports suggest that emergency crews are facing challenges accessing the remote location. Witnesses quoted in La Razon newspaper claimed the train was traveling at excessive speed before the derailment, raising concerns about potential brake failure.
The Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara Cruz expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
The Interoceanic Train, a key infrastructure project inaugurated in 2023 to modernize the rail link across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, connects Salina Cruz on the Pacific coast with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf of Mexico, carrying both passengers and freight. The Mexican government envisions the Isthmus as a strategic trade corridor competing with the Panama Canal. This is not the first incident on this line; in December, a train collided with a cargo truck, though no deaths were reported at the time.
