Fake IAS Officer Busted in Uttar Pradesh: Elaborate Scam Unravels

Gorakhpur, December 29, 2025 – A 27-year-old man has been arrested in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly impersonating an IAS officer and running a sophisticated fraud operation. Lalit Kishor, also known as Gaurav Kumar Singh, from Bihar’s Sitamarhi district, was apprehended after police received a tip-off from the Railway Protection Force.

Singh allegedly created a false identity as a civil servant, even renting a house and displaying a sign identifying himself as “Gaurav Kumar Singh, IAS.” He employed a 10-15 person entourage, paid monthly salaries, and even used AI-generated photos to superimpose his face onto images of real officials.

Police say Singh extorted money from private schools and swindled individuals by promising government tenders in exchange for bribes. His scheme unraveled after a contractor was caught carrying ₹99.09 lakh, believed to be part of a bribe paid to Singh.

“Several forged IDs, mobile phones, laptops, jewellery, cash, bank passbooks, and many AI-generated photos… were seized at the time of his arrest,” said Gorakhpur Superintendent of Police Abhinav Tyagi.

Investigations revealed a history of fraudulent activities. Singh reportedly duped students and landlords in Bihar before assuming his fake identity. His family in Sitamarhi lives in poverty and claims to have had little contact with him since he left several years ago. Police are urging anyone who has been defrauded by Singh, Abhishek Kumar and Parmanand Gupta to come forward and file a complaint.
