Team USA’s Cole Hutson Released From Hospital After Scary Injury at World Junior Championships
St. Paul, Minnesota – December 27, 2025 – Team USA defenseman Cole Hutson suffered a frightening injury Saturday night during their World Junior Championship game against Switzerland, but has since been released from the hospital and is listed as “day-to-day.”
The incident occurred in the second period when Hutson took a puck to the back of the head. Medical personnel immediately attended to him, and he was stretchered off the ice.
“It was a scary situation, no question,” said Team USA head coach Bob Motzko following the game. “The building was silent.”
Despite the unsettling scene, Motzko confirmed that Hutson is now back with the team. “The good news is that he was released and is back with us. We’re thankful for the concern of everyone and the care that he received,” Motzko said.
Hutson, a Washington Capitals prospect currently playing for Boston University, is one of four Terriers representing Team USA in the tournament.
The United States defeated Switzerland 2-1, with goals from Brodie Ziemer and Will Zellers. Basile Sansonnens scored the lone goal for Switzerland.
Team USA will face Slovakia on Monday, while Switzerland will play Germany on Tuesday.
