Lalit Modi Apologizes After “Fugitives” Video with Vijay Mallya Sparks Outrage
New Delhi – December 29, 2025 – Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has issued a public apology after a video he posted on social media, featuring fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya, triggered widespread condemnation. In the now-deleted video, Modi jovially referred to himself and Mallya as “the two biggest fugitives of India” while celebrating Mallya’s birthday in London.
The clip, shared on Instagram, quickly went viral, sparking sharp criticism online. Both Modi and Mallya face allegations of financial irregularities in India and are currently residing abroad.
Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to express regret, stating, “I apologise if I have hurt anyone feelings especially the Indian Government who I have the highest respect and regard for. The statement was misconstrued and was never intended to be as played out. Once again my deepest apologies.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has responded to the incident, reiterating the government’s commitment to bringing fugitives wanted in India back to the country to face trial. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that while legal processes are complex, the government remains “fully committed” to ensuring the return of economic offenders. “We remain fully committed that people who are fugitives and wanted by law in India, return to the country… There are several layers of legalities involved but we remain committed to bring them back to the country so they can face trial before the courts here,” Jaiswal said.
The incident has reignited the debate surrounding India’s efforts to extradite individuals accused of financial crimes who have taken refuge overseas.
