Opposition Leader Gandhi Condemns “Horrific Hate Crime” in Dehradun, Accuses BJP of Normalizing Hate

NEW DELHI, December 29, 2025 – Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has strongly condemned the death of Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura, following an alleged racially motivated attack in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Chakma succumbed to his injuries on December 26, after being attacked on December 9 for objecting to racial slurs.

Gandhi took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express his outrage, calling the incident a “horrific hate crime.” He accused the ruling BJP of “normalizing hate” through toxic content and irresponsible narratives, particularly targeting the youth.

“Hate doesn’t appear overnight,” Gandhi stated. “For years now, it is being fed daily… and it’s being normalised by the hate-spewing leadership of the ruling BJP.”

He emphasized India’s foundation of respect and unity, urging citizens to resist becoming a society that ignores the targeting of fellow Indians. Gandhi extended his condolences to the Chakma family and the people of Tripura and the Northeast, affirming their place as fellow Indians.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that he had received assurances from his Uttarakhand counterpart, Pushkar Singh Dhami, that all those responsible for Chakma’s death would be arrested.

On Sunday, thousands of students from the Tipra Indigenous Students’ Federation held a candle march in Tripura, demanding justice for Angel Chakma.
