Unnao Rape Case: Kuldeep Sengar’s Daughter Claims Family is ‘Exhausted, Frightened’ as Legal Battle Rages On
New Delhi: The daughter of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the former BJP MLA convicted in the Unnao rape case, has penned an open letter expressing her family’s exhaustion, fear, and dwindling faith after eight years of legal battles. The letter was released on the same day the Supreme Court stayed a Delhi High Court decision to suspend Sengar’s life sentence.
Ishita Sengar, writing on X, stated that her family had patiently trusted the Indian Constitution but felt their voices were unheard amidst public anger and social media scrutiny. She detailed the abuse and dehumanization her family has faced, including online threats of rape and death directed at her.
“I have been told countless times on social media that I should be raped, killed, or punished simply for existing,” Ishita Sengar wrote, adding that her family has been drained financially, emotionally, and physically and were met with silence due to the inconvenience of their truth.
The Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, issued a notice to Kuldeep Sengar, seeking his response to the CBI’s plea challenging the High Court’s suspension of his sentence. The court also expressed concerns about the High Court’s interpretation of the term “public servant” under the POCSO Act.
Aishwarya Sengar, Kuldeep Sengar’s other daughter and member of his legal team, stated that the defense was not allowed to argue the merits of the case before the Supreme Court stay was issued. She highlighted alleged inconsistencies in the victim’s statements, a medical board finding suggesting she was over 18, and CDR records that she claims exonerate her father.
The Delhi High Court had previously suspended Sengar’s life sentence, citing the seven years and five months he had already served, pending the outcome of his appeal against his conviction.
