Chennai, December 29, 2025 – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) announced plans to revolutionize waste management in the city, unveiling a daily bulk waste collection program set to launch on February 1, 2026. The initiative aims to streamline waste removal from households, offices, schools, hospitals, hotels, and temples, offering a more efficient service than the current weekly collection.

The program will be implemented across various zones in Chennai, with private contractors responsible for collecting waste from designated sites. Zones I, II, III, and VII will have their waste collected from 674 sites by a private party at a cost of ₹28.75 lakh per month. Zones IX, X, and XIII will handle 1,254 sites with more than 550 tonnes of wet and dry waste collected daily, costing ₹1.67 crore per month. Zones XI, XII, XIV, and XV will cover 779 sites under a similar arrangement. These contractors will deploy fleets of compactors, hook loaders, and other specialized vehicles, along with trained personnel, to collect and transport waste to processing or disposal centers.

The GCC emphasizes a commitment to timely and scientifically managed waste removal, with key performance indicators in place to monitor the program’s effectiveness.

The announcement follows the success of the GCC’s special Saturday bulk waste collection drive, which since October 11, has collected 582.16 metric tonnes of household bulk waste from 1,587 residents. On December 27 alone, 41.36 tonnes were collected from 107 locations and transported to the Kodungaiyur dumpyard. Residents can register for the Saturday service via the “Namma Chennai” app, by calling 1913, or sending a WhatsApp message to 94450 61913.
